How Important are backlinks?

First let me introduce to concept of back links

Backlinks are links that are directed towards a webpage. Popularly called Inbound links. The number of backlinks to a webpage act as vote for the webpage. It also adds to the popularity of the webpage.

Google's first published algorithm is based on Page rank. According to the Page rank algorithm inbound links are counted as vote for the page and outbound as links as votes which the webpage provides to other pages. Since back links are immense part of page rank algorithm they are important from a Search Engine optimizer point of view.

Backlinks need to be quality backlinks for better ranking of web page
According to Search Engine a backlink is a quality backlink if it is relvant for the keyword for which it has been created. further theme of the voting website is similar to the theme of the voted website. Thus we cannot be satisfied with merely getting inbound links we need to keep a check on the quality of the inbound link that matters. Thus a inbound link becomes more relevant if the inbound links to the website come from sites that have content related to the site. If inbound links are found on sites with unrelated content, they are considered less relevant. The higher the relevance of inbound links, the greater their quality.

Quality Backlinks can only be created with time. While it is fairly easy to manipulate links on a web page to try to achieve a higher ranking it is very difficult to influence a search engine with backlinks from other websites. This is also a reason why backlinks factor in so highly into a search engine's algorithm. Lately, however, a search engine's criteria for quality inbound links has gotten even tougher, thanks to unscrupulous webmasters trying to achieve these inbound links by deceptive or sneaky techniques, such as with hidden links, or automatically generated pages whose sole purpose is to provide inbound links to websites. These pages are called link farms, and they are not only disregarded by search engines, but linking to a link farm could get your site banned entirely.

Tips for Quality Backlinks

1. Reciprocal linking: Many times webmasters agree to reciprocal link exchanges in order to boost website rankings. It is a kind of link exchange where a webmaster places a link on his website that points to another webmasters website, and vice versa. It is possible that such kind of links are not relevant. Major search engines like google strongly oppose such kind of irrelevant linking and do update their algorithm for filtering them.

2. Keep track of backlinks:
While building your backlink building campaign it is important that one keeps track of backlinks and how the anchor text of the backlink incorporates keywords relating to your site.

Google Adsense basics

What is Adsense?

An advertising program launched by Google by most of its revenue by allowing other website owners to advertise on their search result pages. All this is managed through a program they call AdWords. Now you can earn a share of the revenue that Google earns from AdWords by placing these same text ads on your site. In other words, you're helping Google advertise and they pay you a percentage of what they earn.
This program is called AdSense.

How AdSense Works
Don't like to read a lot of text? Watch my 4-minute video on how AdSense works.
And now for the text version of how AdSense works...If you go to Google.com and do a search for almost any keyword phrase, you'll notice some "Sponsored Links" that appear on the right side of the screen that are relevant to the keywords you just searched for. Website owners pay Google to display these ads and are charged a predetermined amount every time their ad gets clicked by a web surfer. With the AdSense program, you will display these same text ads on your site just like Google and get paid for it as well. All you do is copy and paste some provided HTML code into your pages and Voila! the ads will show up. Every time an ad is clicked on your site, you will receive a certain percentage of what Google receives from the advertiser.

"How Much Can I Earn With AdSense?"
Google does not disclose exactly how much you'll earn per ad that is clicked.
The commission you receive per click depends on how much advertisers are paying Google for the particular ad. You will earn a share of that amount. I've heard of earnings anywhere from 2 cents to $15 per click.
So it is logical to believe that keyword phrases like debt free, employment, make money, mp3, sex, etc. will earn you more per click since these are highly competitive keywords that are searched for quite a bit on the web.
Advertisers generally pay more for popular terms because they are searched for more.
Even though Google will not reveal how much you are earning for each ad that is clicked from your site, you can still login to your account at any time and see the total amount of revenue you've generated that day, week, month, year, etc.

How Google Matches the Ads to Your Site's Content
One of the main reasons this program is so successful is because the ads that are displayed closely match the content of your website. This increases the chances that someone will click on the ads.
Here's how Google accomplishes the content match...
"...We go beyond simple keyword matching to understand the context and content of web pages. Based on an algorithm that includes such factors as keyword analysis, word frequency, font size, and the overall link structure of the web, we know what a page is about, and can precisely match Google ads to each page."
So let's say you have an information website about yoga. Once you join AdSense and paste their ad code into your site, Google's technology will determine the topic of the pages by scanning for keyword repeats, page title, etc.

Defining Vertical Search

Vertical Search
Vertical search, part of a larger subgrouping known as "specialized" search, is a relatively new tier in the Internet search industry consisting of search engines that focus on specific slices of content. The type of content in special focus may be based on topicality or information type. Vertical search may focus on all manner of differentiating criteria, such as particular locations, multimedia object types and so on.

E.g. a. A medical search engine would clearly be specialized in terms of its topical focus
b. A video search engine would seek out results within content that is in a video format.

Type of Vertical search design
In terms of design and implementation, several models are emerging in vertical search:
The vertical search engine as a destination or portal. Often media companies that own these destination sites optimize them and buy keywords on Google to drive their audience to visit.
Vertical search as a complementary Web site application: This model entails embedding a search engine box on an existing, already trafficked site. One example is CertMag.com.

Type of Advertising Model included with Vertical Search

Cost per click,:Advertiser pays only for each time that a user clicks on the advertisement.
Cost per thousand/cost per impression/cost per view:There are the standardized/traditional method of online advertising
Cost per action,:Emerging model in which the advertiser pays, not on click, or for impressions, but only if the consumer performs a specific action, such as purchases a good.
Paid inclusion:Practice of inserting advertisements in organic search results.
Paid listing:Advertisements appear on top of or beside organic listings and are clearly identified as sponsored links.

Criterias to decide website Usability

Determing Target Users:

1. Focusing on users who already access website to improve satisfaction.
2. Target new users
3. target Search Engines,Advertiserrs

Focussing on design elements:
1. Are animation/graphics hindering user?
2. Page layout impacting performance?
3. Can usability improved by changing navigation structure?

Focussing on usage patterns:

1. Studying user behaviour
2. Determining time user spend on page.
3. Response time of website:Time user get to retrieve information/place an order.

Focussing on Site styles:
1. Focussing on branding?
2. Is cross-site navigation a critical variable?

Google Revenue

Many companies provide forecasts of revenue of Google. However google is among the few companies that have refused to follow this practice. As a result, estimates of Google's revenue by analysts using publicly available data, like comScore numbers, have often been spectacularly wrong.

What exactly Google doing to imp rove revenue front:
1. Google engineers working on optimizing AdWords. Keep bucket-testing AdWords algorithms. Major objective behind an ad optimization project is:
a. Increase revenue per search (RPS) such that ad real estate on the search results page (SERP)is constant.
b. Reduce the ad real estate on each SERP such that RPS not reduced.

Problems to tackle cases when they need to increase RPS, while also using more ad real estate. As need to decide whether to increase revenue or not.

reason for not foreacasting :If Google were to make earnings forecasts there would be huge use of gray hat techniques. The area of the page devotes to ads would keep steadily increasing, leading to longer term problems with customer retention.

Earning pressure on Google: Google's stock price does depend on whether they continue to deliver robust revenue and earnings growth. So implicitly, there is always pressure to beat the estimates. Cut on cost required

Some criteria to Improve User Satisfaction

many web publishers, web servie men need to determine how to improvw user satisfaction:

Constant availability and security remains a very high priority for most organizations. However it si difficult some times. For e.g. ubiquity of e-mail makes it difficult to measure.
major concerns:
1. What do our users do with it?
2. How do they measure server reliability and stability?
3. Do users want improvement in service?

Measurements need to be build to measure the black box :user satisfaction
1. Service availability- Apart from availability we need to consider utilization, functionality, or impact
2. Need to research on user community

In order to measure that, we needed to apply customer service style measurements.
To what extent, though, do they really use it? How many of the features do they use, for what, and to what degree?

Inter-Organizational Value Chain

The value chain of   a company is part of over all value chain. The over all competitive advantage of an organization is not just dependent on the quality and efficiency of the company and quality of products but also upon the that of its suppliers and wholesalers and retailers it may use. The analysis of overall supply chain is called the value system. Different parts of the value chain 1.  Supplier     2.  Firm       3.   Channel 4 .   Buyer

Big-M Method and Two-Phase Method

Big-M Method The Big-M method of handling instances with artificial  variables is the “commonsense approach”. Essentially, the notion is to make the artificial variables, through their coefficients in the objective function, so costly or unprofitable that any feasible solution to the real problem would be preferred, unless the original instance possessed no feasible solutions at all. But this means that we need to assign, in the objective function, coefficients to the artificial variables that are either very small (maximization problem) or very large (minimization problem); whatever this value, let us call it Big M . In fact, this notion is an old trick in optimization in general; we  simply associate a penalty value with variables that we do not want to be part of an ultimate solution(unless such an outcome is unavoidable). Indeed, the penalty is so costly that unless any of the  respective variables' inclusion is warranted algorithmically, such variables will ...
